How would you describe your job to someone outside of the field?

I help share the student, alumni, faculty and institutional stories of our largest partners.

Name three words that describe your role at Collegis.

  1. Reputation
  2. Awareness
  3. Affinity

How does your role help support our partners?

I am dedicated to protecting and growing an institution’s brand. My role is critical in determining when and how the brand shows up externally. I impact partner happiness by driving the narrative and seeking out placements to elevate the brand’s mission and thought leadership.

What are some common questions you hear from coworkers or partners throughout the day?

  • “Do you know of an alumni who did X, Y, Z?”
  • “How does the college president like to talk about the college’s mission?”
  • “Can you make me sound better?”
  • “Can’t you just write a press release about it?”

What skills do you need to succeed in your role?

Communication skills first and foremost – both written and verbal. You must have a positive affinity for storytelling and be able to bring complex ideas and numbers together to shape a compelling narrative. To work in PR, you have to be relational and willing to connect with a variety of stakeholders and audiences.

You must also be a learner. It is crucial to be on top of what is going on with an institution’s brand but also understand market dynamics and larger industry trends that could have an impact on the partner.

What do you enjoy most about your role at Collegis?

I love the stories I’m able to tell. I enjoy speaking with students, alumni and faculty members and bringing their remarkable stories to life.

What do you enjoy most about Collegis?

My colleagues. I work with extremely smart, compassionate and talented individuals – many of whom I’ve come to consider dear friends.

What drew you to work in the higher education field?

I think everyone at Collegis is passionate about higher education. It opens doors, grows communities and changes lives. We are privileged to live in a country with so many educational opportunities. Dreams are within reach.

Where did you go to college and what degree did you obtain?

I attended Winona State University and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Mass Communications with an emphasis in Public Relations. I also earned a minor in Psychology.

What do you value most from your own college experience?

I most value the connections I made while in college. Relationships are the most precious thing we can cultivate.

What qualities do you look for when adding members to your team?

  • Collaborative
  • Communicator
  • Detailed

What is one thing you’ve learned about higher ed since you started working at Collegis?

It is extremely complex and at times volatile. I’ve learned that the political climate has a significant impact on the industry.

Is there a Collegis project you worked on that is most memorable or you’re particularly proud of?

The project we dubbed “Soldier Surprise” was a true surprise and pleasure to be a part of. A mother was surprised by her son who came back from a deployment to surprise her at her nursing pinning ceremony. As a military wife myself, it was so touching! This was our team’s first taste of our content “going viral.” After being picked up by national media outlets, it was surreal being on a call with a writer for Good Morning America and watching the hundreds of brand mentions fly in.

What’s something you’re hoping to check off your bucket list?

I would love to open my own food truck someday.
